Insight whisperer – Ola Lanko
In this exhibition, Ola Lanko invites you to embark on a quest for meaning and understanding. She takes on the role of an ‘insight whisperer’ facilitating a conversation with your rational and irrational self, using a playful exploration of materiality translated into abstraction.
Creating with the help of invisible forces, the artist points out our inability to understand the world only through its materiality. Taking a single object as a point of departure, she expands and unfolds our comprehension of it.
This series of abstract, intuitive and contemplative works is a collection of insights to be made by the viewer. Ola Lanko invites you to expand existing maps to navigate the world, reject fixed models of reality, and provoke personal discovery and transformation by marrying the senses and rationality.
The transdisciplinary exhibition features the artist’s most recent research, in which she looks for a crossover between metaphysics, new spirituality, agnosticism, materiality, and the real. It includes photographic works, sound, aromas, and intimate conversations with visitors in search of personal insight through questioning and self-inquiry.
Ola Lanko (b. Ukraine, 1985) studied sociology at the National University of Kyiv, and photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Over the past ten years, she has built a continuous and ever-changing practice with a strong focus on complex, multifaceted and multidisciplinary frameworks and a large diversity of artistic strategies. From photography to immersive multisensorial installations, it combines intuitive and rational wisdom into layered structures that invite us to wonder in search of meaning.
Lanko’s practice is inspired by alternative knowledge, cognitive science, transformative processes, monism, plants, smells, sounds, and textiles. She addresses rising inequality and fear, polarization and the shattering of common realities, the crisis of meaning and trust, and subconscious drives and desires.
Lanko also teaches photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Her work has been shown in numerous institutions including the Foam museum of photography in Amsterdam, Kunsthaus Wien, the Museo Amparo in Puebla, Mexico, and the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. In 2015 she was an artist in residence at the Wiels contemporary art center in Brussels, and in 2017 she attended the HISK postgraduate art institute in Ghent. Her works have been acquired by Foam, and by ING, KPMG, LUMC, and several private collections.
