Gallery Talk: Freedom of Movement

With Karen Archey

The gallery talks provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions about the exhibition with an expert. The first speaker is Karen Archey, curator of this exhibition. She will guide visitors through her personal selection of artworks.

The central theme of this year’s exhibition of the Municipal Art Acquisitions is ‘Freedom of Movement’. This term is commonly used to describe people’s right to travel beyond their native country without requiring visas. As neo-nationalist and populist political movements gain traction in the West, the phrase “freedom of movement” has become charged with various connotations. The exhibition explores people’s movement as a political factor and in various ways addresses the idea of movement and the possibility of resistance. How much freedom do we have, and how much freedom do we grant each other?

Each edition of the Municipal Art Acquisitions focuses on a different discipline. This year’s edition focuses on time-based media: artworks that last for a specific length of time, such as film and video work, performance, dance, theatre, new media, sound  and internet art. The exhibition closely reflects the contemporary practice of many artists, who follow their ideas without restricting their expression to any one medium.
