Gallery Talk: Spirits of the Soil - Raquel van Haver

On the occasion of the exhibition Spirits of the Soil, the Stedelijk Museum is organizing two Gallery Talks.

The gallery talks provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions about the exhibition with an expert. The first speaker is the artist of the exhibition, Raquel van Haver. She will guide visitors through her personal selection of artworks.
Spirits of the Soil is a new series of monumental paintings specially made for the exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum. In a raw and expressive manner, Van Haver depicts her experiences in Amsterdam’s Bijlmer district and the suburbs of Caribbean and Latin American cities, which originated from the African Diaspora. The title refers to the residents of these districts who she met and befriended during her stays. These 'Spirits of the Soil' are the greatest source of inspiration for Van Haver’s work: everyday life and rituals are depicted with a very specific sense of form and a great material complexity.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Raquel van Haver was born in 1989 in Bogota, Colombia. In 2012 she graduated with a BA in Fine Art from HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht. She is interested in cultural, ethnic backgrounds, identity, norms, and values. This is expressed in her monumental, collage-like compositions combining oil paint, charcoal, wax, hair, cardboard, chalk, gypsum, and gel, on woven burlap prepared with tar.

Van Haver was the recipient of the 2017 De Scheffer award, which was accompanied by a solo exhibition. She was also nominated for the Wolvecamp Prize in 2018, and in 2012, 2013 and 2015 for the Dutch Royal Award for Modern Painting, which she won in 2018.
