Event: Come closer - Jo Kali

18 January at Oude Kerk
Jo Kali

Deep Listening is listening to everything all of the time. Developed by composer Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), the practice explores our use of consciousness, our ability to train and develop our senses, and leads us between the involuntary nature of hearing and the voluntary, selective nature of listening.

In this workshop musicologist and writer Jo Kali will use Deep Listening to navigate our listening experience inside the Oude Kerk, engaging with ‘The Instrument Of Troubled Dreams’, a site-specific installation by Janet Cardiff (1957) and George Bures Miller (1960) that was composed in and around the church itself. Following the teachings of Oliveros we will be lead through sonic meditations – sounding, listening, and movement practices – to cultivate a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and increase our ability to experiment, improvise, and be playful with sound.

Both beginners and more experienced ears are welcome to join this interactive workshop as we explore listening as an active process and invite you to strengthen connections with yourself and with others, through sounding and listening.

This workshop is given in English. Make sure to dress warmly and comfortable. After the workshop the Koffieschenkerij will be open for drinks and conversation. The amount of tickets is limited, so reserve your seat online.
