NHM Film Matinee: Refugee Movements Past and Present

Old and new documentaries on refugee movements. Subjects covered include the illegal migration of Dutch Jews to Mandatory Palestine between 1945 and 1948, coinciding with the exhibition Aliyah Bet. Another subject is the current worldwide movement of refugees through the eyes of Ai Weiwei, in his movie Human Flow (2017). Weiwei shows the human faces behind the numbers and statistics.

THE ILLEGALS (LO TAFHIDENU)
Directed by Meyer Levin, 1948, 57 minutes

This is a dramatized documentary about the illegal journey of Holocaust survivors from Europe to Mandatory Palestine. The film by Meyer Levin inspired films like Exodus (Otto Preminger, 1960). From the Spielberg Jewish Film Archives of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the World Zionist Organization.

The worldwize refugee crisis seen through the eyes of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who filmed with 25 camera crews in more than 20 countries.
