Tronies - Alex van Warmerdam

1 September - 13 October at GRIMM Keizersgracht
GRIMM presents the first exhibition of Alex van Warmerdam where he showcases a number of new paintings under the title Tronies. A tronie was, especially in the Golden Age, a portrait study of an unnamed model. When painting these heads - the old Dutch meaning of the word - it was not about displaying the identity of the portrayed or the correct likeness with his appearance, but about the imagination of a personality, a state of mind, about expressing of facial features, emotions and character.
