Between Traditional and Contemporary in African Art.
South Africa-born Belgian artist Kendell Geers changed his date of birth to May 1968 in order to be reborn as a work of art. Describing himself as an “AniMystikAKtivist”, his artistic approach combines often contradictory Afro-European traditions, including animism, alchemy, mysticism, ritual and sociopolitical activism.
In the spirit of the archetypal trickster, Geers uses his experiences as a white African as a skeleton key to unlock our understanding of history, culture and identity. With his sculptures, performances, drawings and mixed-media installations, the artist develops a visual vocabulary characterized by provocation, black humor and irony. Geers will create site-specific installations on the occasion of Amsterdam Art Weekend 2018.
