Shake A Face - Gabriel Lester and Sam Samiee

23 November - 12 January at Galerie Fons Welters
Gabriel Lester and Sam Samiee

Galerie Fons Welters presents its seventh solo exhibition of work by Gabriel Lester, featuring several new series of works from the past couple of years. Light plays an important part in all of these, and has been an underlying concern in Lester’s work since his seminal 1999 piece ‘How to Act’.

The front of a series of black steel sculptures is reminiscent of the simple shape of a face. The eyes and mouth consist of perforated steel, which lets light fall through the sculpture, creating three-dimensional shapes on the steel grid. A new installation shows ten overturned bronze flowerpots with plants sprouting from them. Again, it shows Lester’s fascination with the power of light on the world, emphasizing the strength of the organism that continues to evolve and live even after its destruction and deconstruction.

Galerie Fons Welters presents a solo exhibition by Sam Samiee in the front space of the gallery. Samiee is a former Rijksakademie resident, and his practice is built on two important pillars: painting and research. His installations are filled with paintings and sculptural elements, and make references to Persian literature, psychoanalysis, western art history, and philosophy. They often evoke a sense of disorientation, making us change our relationship with space and time and inviting us actively to participate in the birth of new, more interrelated worlds.
