Jacob Riis (1849-1914) is considered one of the pioneers of the documentary genre. Riis was a journalist and social reformer in New York around the turn of the century. He used the camera to capture the impoverished living conditions of the slums of Lower Manhattan. His images illustrated lectures and books in an effort to change the squalid situations of The Other Half.
The Other Half - The Activist Photography of Jacob Riis was developed in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York.
