Fly for Fun - Ruben Kragt

7 April - 12 May at C&H gallery
C&H gallery is proud to announce ‘Fly for Fun’, the second solo exhibition of Ruben Kragt in the gallery. Every piece of reality can be the subject for a painting. This requires the painter to be alert, a subsequent work can be found at any time and at any place. The title “Fly for Fun” refers to Ruben’s preference for this apparent randomness of subjects.

A reoccurring theme in his paintings is boredom in freedom or in holiday situations. For Ruben, the ultimate sound of boredom is that of a two-seater plane in the summer that keeps flying back and forth. This sound becoming louder and softer, turning around again and still not going anywhere. He finds the same quality around the swimming pool in the sun, where it is quiet and warm, with hard shadows and hard colors, or in a souvenir shop where you can buy a mug with your favorite nature park. Thus the title “Fly for Fun”.

In addition, “Fly for Fun” refers to the adventure of painting and discovering something new. Just as the traveler, by planning a trip, makes room for an encounter with the unknown, Ruben makes room for surprise by working from a clear plan. In the implementation of that idea, Ruben is looking for a direct and effective way of painting. An action on the canvas always has a consequence for the painting.

Ruben Kragt (NL, 1988) lives and works in Utrecht. He studied Fine Arts at HKU in Utrecht and completed a residency at de Ateliers in Amsterdam in 2014. Ruben has participated in numerous group shows including Offspring 2014 at de Ateliers, Door Schildersogen 2 at Arti et Amiticiae in Amsterdam among others.
