A reoccurring theme in his paintings is boredom in freedom or in holiday situations. For Ruben, the ultimate sound of boredom is that of a two-seater plane in the summer that keeps flying back and forth. This sound becoming louder and softer, turning around again and still not going anywhere. He finds the same quality around the swimming pool in the sun, where it is quiet and warm, with hard shadows and hard colors, or in a souvenir shop where you can buy a mug with your favorite nature park. Thus the title “Fly for Fun”.
In addition, “Fly for Fun” refers to the adventure of painting and discovering something new. Just as the traveler, by planning a trip, makes room for an encounter with the unknown, Ruben makes room for surprise by working from a clear plan. In the implementation of that idea, Ruben is looking for a direct and effective way of painting. An action on the canvas always has a consequence for the painting.
