Conversation between Marja Bloem and artist Rini Hurkmans (livestream)

28 November at Lumen Travo Gallery
Rini Hurkmans (NL, 1954)

In 1972 Michelangelo's Pietà was attacked. Artist Rini Hurkmans uses this moment as a point of departure from which questions of absence and loss, ethics and politics can be explored, The Pietà presents us with an image of a mother and her dead son. Gestures of love, loss and grief come under assault, thus creating a scene in which justice meets injustice and vulnerability meets strength. Hurkmans investigates the destructive act, the work's regeneration and conservation, resulting in a profound exploration of gesture and its engaging role in communality, closeness, sensibility and intuition.
