With ‘Bar no.5’ Margriet Craens creates an autonomous art installation out of a high-gloss, black lacquered bar. The work is the fifth incarnation of her ongoing examination of social relations. When staffed, this bar gives sessions in social hygiene, a compulsory course all Dutch hospitality entrepreneurs must take in order to operate legally. Through short, personal sessions the bar offers a modified version of this course, which ordinarily prioritizes respect for one another's physical and mental health. In practice—both in hospitality and in life—this turns out not to be so easy.
