Vereniging Ons Suriname: 100 years of struggle and emancipation in the Netherlands

8 November - 1 January at The Black Archives
Featuring contemporary art by Raul Balai, Patricia Kaersenhout and Shertise Solano

In January 2019 Vereniging Ons Suriname (Our Surinam Association) will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Over the course of that century, the association has played a pivotal role in the emancipation and resistance struggle of Surinamers in the Netherlands.

Over the past hundred years, numerous remarkable stories and events have emerged that had long remained suppressed. Some are already familiar, others are still to be discovered. Stories about migration, hope, love, struggle, racism, resistance to racism, but also about art, sports and everything in between. We discovered these stories in the archives of this 100-year-old association.
