Impossibe Journeys in The Netherlands, Russia and Persia, now and then

10 May - 8 June at Cargo in Context
with Sepideh Behrouzian (IR), Oleg Elagin (RU), Cecilia Hendrikx (NL), Zeinab Shahidi Marnani (IR), Paulien Oltheten (NL) and Oksana Stogovab (RU); curated by Irina Leifer. Impossible Journeys (…) intends to offer new perspectives on art, travel and participation and investigates the challenges and possibilities of changing historical and cultural perspectives. Curator Irina Leifer has been inspired by the book ‘Three exceptional and very catastrophic journeys’ (Amsterdam 1676) by the Dutch sailmaker Jan Janz Struys. It is a report of his travel experiences in the East and includes also colourful and expressive descriptions of the obstacles, ways of living, habits and appearances of the people Struys met. The participating artists on their turn, scrutinize contemporary cultural fault lines and limitations they encountered themselves during their journeys through the same countries. The exhibition showcases a combination of historical objects and contemporary art works. Together with a public program the artists address the challenge of multiple perspectives and histories. These can divide people, but they can also bring them closer together in a dialogue that recognizes differences as something inherently valuable. It also illuminates rooted prejudices that have been perpetuated for centuries. After Cargo, the exhibition will travel to Isfahan (IR), Samara (RU) and Moscow (RU)
