For his first solo show with Upstream Gallery, Harm van den Dorpel will produce a new series of semi-algorithmically generated works. The works in this exhibition are preceded by software written by Van den Dorpel, acting as a ‘proxy’ in the artistic process.

At the core of these works lies a hierarchical analysis of the structure of language. The software mimics biological processes such as growth, fertility, and evolution. Akin to the structure of a family tree, each work has virtual chromosomes, parents and relatives. By means of feedback, Van den Dorpel trains the software to learn and evolve over many generations, resulting in the adaptation of the population. Individual properties of specimens, such as promiscuity and interconnectedness, inform the choice which works do and don’t materialise.
Harm van den Dorpel (1981, the Netherlands) lives and works in Berlin. Selected (group) exhibitions include the New Museum in New York, MoMa PS1 in New York, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Museum Kurhaus Kleve, ZKM Karlsruhe, and the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam.
