Koen Vermeule Soul shades 2016 oil and acrylic on canvas 230 x 180 cm
Since 1992 Koen Vermeule (The Netherlands, 1965) works on an oeuvre that consists of paintings and works on paper. He debuted with an exhibition at Art & Project Gallery (Amsterdam) after which he was asked to exhibit at various museums and galleries in the Netherlands and abroad.
Vermeule paints landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes. The first two big, wide and empty, the urban landscape zooming in on small, concentrated scenes with people who seem to have put their actions and movements on hold. His work is characterised by silence and a theatrical impact.
The paintings are not narrative. Koen Vermeule sees the world with a photographic eye. He 'catches' every day, fleeting reality and hold it for a moment. He wants the mystery out of the mundane and tries to uncover the trivial. His works are reflections on the present day, the rapid technological developments and the related social behaviour.
