This summer, acclaimed art collector Frans Oomen will present part of his collection at C&H art space. Oomen has been collecting editions since 1985 and has already acquired over 1500 pieces. A selection of the most radical works will be presented in Radical Collecting, to show that an edition can be more than just bronze sculptures and photography. With objects from renowned artists such as Nan Goldin, Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, Rob Pruitt, Jannis Kounellis, Franz West, Andres Serrano, Hermann Nitsch, Chris Offili, Shirin Neshat, but also by young talent like Adam Pendleton, Sean Landers, Su Tomesen and Ragnar Kjartansson.

Making editions is an age-old artistic practice. Artists from Dürer to Hokusai carved images into woodblocks, which they then could print countless times. It was a quick and economical way of producing art, which ensured the artist of a steady income. It also made high quality art available for those who couldn't afford to commission an artist. With the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, the principle of affordable art flourished.

Nowadays, art editions come in all shapes and sizes. Radical Collecting will offer an overview of all the varieties: from bronze to ceramics to ready-mades, and from photography to painting to assemblages. What sets these works apart is that they are all unique, despite the size of their edition. They are not mechanical reprints of an original, but handmade pieces or individually reworked objects. This artistic process makes each work exceptional and gives it a certain aura.

Frans Oomen (Amsterdam, 1962) has been collecting art since 1985 and is ranked among Kunstweek's top 100 Dutch art collectors for many years. He doesn't keep his collection behind closed doors: he often lends pieces to museums, such as Museum De Pont (Tilburg) and dedicates special exhibitions to it (for example at Kunstfort Vijfhuizen). He also let the film crew of Kunstuur into his home, where he keeps his art, to document his collection (AVRO/TROS, 2012). Oomen often collaborates with artists to issue a new edition, and he is the owner of mo-artgallery, an online gallery that specializes in prints, drawings and other limited edition artworks. To top it all off, Oomen teaches at InHolland, a university of applied sciences in Haarlem.
