Friday November 24 the group exhibition ‘Swashbuckling’, with Astrit Ismaili, Sophie Serber en Florian en Michael Quistrebert will open at Galerie Juliette Jongma. Coinciding with the opening, Vleeshal and Galerie Juliette Jongma will host a joint performance-evening with performances by Freddie Mercado (1967) and Astrit Ismaili (Kosovo, 1991).

The Puerto Rican artist Freddie Mercado uses grotesque and humoristic elements of female travesty and drag in his performances and interventions. Mercado’s alter ego – a combination of local, national and Caribbean (historic) elements – challenges current and local notions of transgender, trans-local and Caribbean identities. In his life, work and performances Freddie Mercado moves in between discomfort and recognition, and questions and dismantles societal and cultural constructions with care and humour.

As a performance artist Astrit Ismaili operates between visual art, theatre and pop culture. He has a background in theatre directing and graduated from Amsterdam’s DAS Art institute in 2016. With his performances he creates intimate experiences that engage with body and gender politics. Ismaili constructs fictional spaces and parallel realities, playing with the perception of space and time. Hope and melancholy, knowledge and naivety, the process of “becoming”… For Gallery Night he presents an emo pop experience with songs about cosmic space, alchemy and feminine energy.
