Aernoud Bourdrez is a lawyer specialising in intellectual property and the art of negotiation, counting many artists and photographers among his clients. At Huize Frankendael, Bourdrez presents a selection of his private art collection, which includes works by Viviane Sassen, Henri Cartier Bresson, Jacqueline Hassink, Scheltens & Abbenes, Paul Kooiker, Helmut Newton, Paul Huf, Dana Lixenberg and Saskia Noor van Imhoff. The works will be shown alongside the results of his remarkable negotiations such as the butt X-Ray from Jackass which came in his possession by trading the object with an actual car.

This exhibition examines the various ways in which Bourdrez’s personal collection has grown over the years, and seizes the opportunity to assemble these works in a novel way. Alongside the exhibition, a public programme will unfold, inviting special guests to shed light on these various aspects to the collector as well as the very act of collecting.

For Bourdrez, as for any collector, behind every collected photograph or object is a personal story, or a new chapter of development of personal taste and experience. The exhibition delves into the desire to (re)organise works according to various modes and meanings of collecting, by connecting personal motives to categorisations ranging from instant arousal to sheer materialism, feeling a need to possess works by ‘big names’, collecting works that incite a strike of personal association, towards a deeper understanding of the intentions and positions of the photographers and their subjects, and the appreciation of conceptual resonance.
