Marcel van den Berg, #WeWorkOnTheOtherSideOfTime

In this solo exhibition, Marcel van den Berg unites various artistic disciplines: from painting to graffiti, and from sculpting to ready-mades. Through the combination of classical disciplines with everyday materials, he emphasizes the contrast between two separate worlds that he simultaneously occupies: the art world on the one hand, and the street on the other. With his radical work, Van den Berg tries to lift the boundaries between the two.

Van den Berg works from his material and uses an abstract expressionist visual language. Each work is part of a continuous process in which there is a constant rearrangement of status, content, meaning and even form. He combines cheap materials and pictures on a canvas, which he then paints over, besmirches with lyrics and damages through cutting and tearing. By holding on to this direct way of communication, he brings the raw, dynamic energy of the street into the art world.

Marcel van den Berg (Alphen a/d Rijn, 1978) works in Amsterdam, in the Bijlmermeer. He studied Fine Arts at the Willem de Kooning Academie (Rotterdam), and completed a residency at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam) afterwards. He has since won several scholarships, among which a recent contribution from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts to develop his artistic practice. Van den Berg has exhibited at Arti et Amicitiae, De Nederlandsche Bank and at the Lust for Life show by WeLikeArt! (all in Amsterdam), among others.
