In the early morning the Oude Kerk is a meditative oasis in the city, with an enervating rising of the sun through the towering church windows. At this early hour you can enjoy the Silence music programme, a contemplative counterpoint to a hectic city centre.

michiel borstlap
On 3 November the series features pianist and composer Michiel Borstlap, who is one of the most renowned jazz pianists in the Netherlands. The accolades he has won include the Thelonious Monk/BMI Composers Award, several Edisons, and a Dutch Golden Calf for film music. He frequently performs with jazz and pop musicians, and his compositions are performed by the most prominent jazz musicians of our time, such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. This summer, Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle presented audire et videre I, a new sound sculpture by Michiel Borstlap.

In the Oude Kerk Michiel Borstlap will be performing a sequence of compositions and improvisations on the piano, responding to the church’s spatial qualities, acoustics and architecture, as well as the art by Iswanto Hartono that is currently on display. The reason for inviting Michiel Borstlap to perform in the Silenceseries was his most recent album Velvet, an exploration of the space between musical notes, shadow and silence.

music in the oude kerk
The Oude Kerk boasts an impressive musical history and in the 16th century the church was one of the first places in Northern Europe where audiences could enjoy public concerts. While the restoration of the Vater-Müller organ is underway, the Oude Kerk decided to make good use of these quiet times and turn its attention to a new musical programme. Conversations with musicians, artists and programmers resulted in the November 2016 launch of a music programme that ties in with the Oude Kerk’s art programme and the context of a monumental building. The concerts in the Silence series always start at 08:00 and are often held on the morning of the first Friday of the month.

Silence #8 is scheduled for 2 February 2018.
