Berend Strik, Decipher The Artist’s Mind (Studio Martha Rosler), 2016 [detail], stitched c-print, 130 x 100 cm, Courtesy Galerie Fons Welters

With one person, there’s lecturing, but with two characters, there’s a dialogue—immediately there’s a confrontation between the two. – Lucas Samaras, Interview Magazine

In Redefining Realness, Berend Strik’s seventh solo exhibition with Galerie Fons Welters, Strik shows artist studios and their contents in his characteristic style of stitched c-prints. In the new works the studios form an abstraction, offering us an insight into the practices of the artist and giving us a handle to grasp their work. Strik’s act of reworking the photos simultaneously emphasize and abstract both sides of the works. With one gesture, he is able to connect them.

On the back of the work Strik made after his visit to the studio of Martha Rosler about ten images of women can be seen. ‘Historical heroines’ according to Strik, ‘with whom he connects Rosler, herself an outspoken feminist’. The front of the work shows a photo taken by Strik during his visit with Rosler; part of the inside of her New York red brick house that holds her studio and archive. The work exemplifies Strik’s newest series of work on view at Galerie Fons Welters, for which the artist visited numerous of artist studios around the world, photographing the studios or their elements and connecting them, in a delicate way, with personal memories or references to the artist.
