Each year EYE devotes a major exhibition to an important film author, such as Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, David Cronenberg, Michelangelo Antonioni and, last summer, Robby Müller. In the summer of 2017 EYE will stage an exhibition devoted to one of the most important American film directors of the past half century: Martin Scorsese (Queens, New York, 1942). Scorsese’s wonderfully styled films tell the stories of individuals on the fringes of society. His characters are repeatedly confronted with fear and betrayal and are seldom capable of determining the course of their own lives. Violence plays a central role in his films, many of which are set in New York, and in particular Little Italy, a district mostly inhabited by Italian immigrants, where Scorsese himself grew up.
