Future Petroleum - Annika Kappner

Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner is an installation performance that invites the audience to experience a subtle explosion of visuals, sound, smell and taste with all  senses. Annika Kappner explores the layering of perception in the virtual space in relation to the digital and physical world based on the idea that energy never vanishes but transforms continuously, as in the creation of fossil fuels that are the product of anaerobic decomposition processes lasting millions of years. Through projected (self)images she questions aspirational versions of ourselves and our surroundings: what is the influence on our self image of the accumulation of all the mental and physical spaces, materials and formats engulfing us in an incessant stream co-created by the prosumer, the creative and tech industry, the corporate and the art world? How do our individual and collective desires ultimately take shape and are mirrored and transformed in the context of an image economy? Future Petroleum slices and merges the consumption of experiences to create a tableau vivant enveloping the senses of the viewer, wondering what form of energy source this vast stream of individual and collective image and data will eventually yield.
