Gijs Bakker (Amersfoort, 1942) is internationally regarded as a pioneer in the field of contemporary jewelry. He made his breakthrough in 1967, when showing a collection of fashion- and jewelry designs in the Stedelijk Museum together with his wife and co-designer Emmy van Leersum (1930-1984). His revolutionary designs, including the "Kachelpijp Collier" (a necklace made from a stove pipe), are now icons of Dutch design.

Trained as both Jewelry- as an industrial designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm, Bakker makes designs that include furniture, household appliances, public spaces and exhibitions. In addition, education has always occupied an important place in his career. From 1987 to 2012 he taught at the Design Academy Eindhoven (since 2000 as head of the Masters program).
