From Friday 22 to Sunday 24 January the video NIGHT AT THE OBSERVATORY will transfer PS in a disco. A video work that emerged from a collaboration between visual artist Frédéric Sanchez Dialynas, graphic designer Jean-Sébastien Grill and DJ Nic Ford and refers to the nightclub The Observatory in Saigon, Vietnam.

Their collaboration, the fruit of their passion for South East Asia, is a mix of their different practices and their interest for geometric abstract painting, graphic design and deep house music. The project takes the form of an epileptic movie in which the flag of Vietnam is constantly changing colors, following the rhythm of the sound track. In face of globalization, emerging countries are torn between their traditions and modernization and must reaffirm their identity to stake their geopolitical ground. The video proposes different alternatives for a new emblem, playing with concepts of patriotism, ideology and propaganda. The projection transforms the exhibition’s space into a disco, a party celebrating Vietnam, its people, and life in general.

Frédéric Dialynas Sanchez (lives and works in Paris and Sète), did post graduate studies in Lyon (ENBA, 2008/2009) and Shanghai (École Offshore, 2013/2014). His work focuses mainly on geometric abstraction and the cultural. He participated in numerous projects in Saigon, Hanoi, New York, Boston, Montreal, Vienna, Stockholm and Paris.

Jean-Sébastien Grill (lives and work in Nancy), is an independent graphic designer.

Nic Ford (lives and works in Saigon) grew up in Manchester UK, and started dj’ing in the mid 1990s. He is one half of the British electronic music DJ & production duo MadderModes. Runs Shift Coordinate Points imprint with production partner Andy Harper and is the resident DJ at The Observatory, Saigon, Vietnam.
