Daniel Schubert, Untitled, 2017, egg tempera and crayon on canvas, 170 x 115 cm

Gerhard Hofland is proud to present the second solo exhibition by Daniel Schubert in the Amsterdam gallery.

The paintings by Daniel Schubert are always abstract. They vary from ephemeral and poetic works in which the transparency of the canvas plays an important role, to more graphical paintings with subtle patterns and forms, and works in which the skin of the painting is explored.

Observations are always at the base of Schubert’s paintings. This goes as much for the artist, who combines natural and urban elements form his immediate surroundings with existent visual materials, as for the way his paintings challenge the spectator’s sensory perception. Schubert restructures his close observations into well-balanced, abstract compositions, generating works that seem almost meditative in appearance. Their concentrated serenity, expressed through shape and colour, together with their subtle forms of optical illusion, make Schubert’s paintings intriguing and cause a need for an up-close encounter with the canvas.

Schubert’s working method is also one of peace and tranquility. Working in traditional techniques including the use of rabbit glue and homemade egg tempera, the process of creation takes months before a painting reaches its completion. It is a slow, elongated proces in which Schubert finds new forms of expression through painting and in which he gives fleeting impressions from everyday life a deeper and lasting meaning.
